About ZTE
Nowadays, smartphone manufacturers seem to have an easy time of releasing devices at premium prices. It seems our passion for technology is outrunning our desire to spot value for money. ZTE, though, are an alternative to the “stack it high, price it higher” philosophy which dominates the marketplace.
ZTE are a Chinese technology manufacturer based in China. Unlike many Chinese smartphone manufacturers, instead of concentrating just on Asian market, ZTE are making inroads into the US. They are doing this by producing devices towards the higher end of mid-range, but keeping prices amazingly low.
Some Maven 3 Basics
The Maven 3 is a great choice if you’re looking for a well-equipped smartphone. If you don’t need an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy S7, and the high prices that come with them, look no further.
While the hardware specs may not be quite what you’ll see in smartphones a fair way up the price scale, the ZTE Maven 3 does a great job of being extremely competitive against its direct competition. Few in this class can match what the Maven 3 brings to the table. From the bright clear 5″ display that shows excellent color rendition, to the 2070mAh battery for 18 hours talk time, it’s all here.
The display is also covered by scratch-resistant Dragontrail glass to keep it protected from everyday bruises and bumps.
Powering The Maven 3
The Quad-Core, 64bit A7 processor is plenty zippy enough to keep the Maven zooming along nicely. Gaming and movies are a pleasure on such a clear and decent sized screen. The 2070mAh battery, as well as providing 18 hours of talktime also gives up to 12 days of standby. If you are a music lover, you get up to 56 hours of playback. All in all ZTE have done a terrific job of making the Maven 3 incredibly efficient in what it needs to do.
Connecting The Maven 3
It might seem obvious to say that any modern smartphone is 4G compatible, but you’d be surprised. Often, lower down the scale, 4G is omitted and 3G is the default mobile data connection. Traditionally, users of less expensive smartphones haven’t needed browsing as a priority, and so 4G was considered an unneeded luxury. But, here it is, so you can browse the days away to your heart’s content.
Wifi 802.11 b/g/n with mobile hotspot is included on the Maven 3. The same can be said for A-GPS for the most accurate positioning and location services available.
Bluetooth 4.2 connects to in-car systems or compatible Bluetooth accessories such as headphones or speakers.
And the Rest
We say that as though what comes here is just consequential, but far from it.
The rear camera is 5MP, with LED flash, autofocus, a self-timer, geo-tagging, HDR and panorama imaging. The front camera is an above average (for this price point) 2MP. Video can be recorded at 720p HD.
There’s 8GB of internal storage, with the option to add a further 32GB via the Micro SD card slot. Plenty of room to carry those movies and music files.
At 5.7 x 2.83 x 0.39 inches, the Maven 3 is a nice size to hold in the hand without feeling bulky. The weight is 5.64 ounces, which is about average for a 5″ screen smartphone. Overall, it sits very nicely in the hand and feels very secure in use.
Summary
The ZTE Maven 3 goes a couple of big steps further than most in its class, and takes some great hardware and packs it into an impressive and stylish looking case. There’s no longer any need to spend a fortune on a smartphone with devices like the Maven 3, as everything you need is right here.
